Features & Benefits

The consistent supply of water can transform crop production for small farmers. Drip, sprinkler and trench irrigation systems can be supplied depending on what is most appropriate for the crop. Powering irrigation systems by the sun has a range of benefits for farming communities:

Food security

  • Improved crop quality and yield and greater number of annual crops
  • Greater food security for families and communities

Water security

  • Reduces water consumption
  • Delivers water directly to root zones
  • Water management can be aligned with crop type

Clean technology

  • Solar powered irrigation systems can eliminate the need for fossil-fuel powered pumps thereby reducing CO2 emissions
  • Local air quality is improved
  • Community impact on global climate change is reduced
  • Eliminates health risks associated with handling fossil fuels

Healthier soils

  • Drip system irrigation helps to retain valuable topsoil
  • Less costly pesticides and fertilisers are needed due to reduced run-off

Economic benefits

  • Reduced or eliminated expenditure on fuel for generator pumps
  • Developing communities are less exposed to and impacted by fluctuations in global fuel prices
  • Minimised cost from more efficient use of fertiliser due to reduced topsoil loss
  • Time previously spent collecting and delivering water can be dedicated to more productive activities
  • Excess crop yields can be sold for income generation
  • Improved water efficiency and reliable access to water allows investment in higher value crops
  • Reliable water source enables crops for income and not just subsistence.

Mono Energy’s packaged irrigation solutions include  pumps, solar modules, control electronics, wiring and irrigation equipment. The water pumps can  be surface-mounted, floating or submersible. The irrigation systems can be connected to existing or  new water sources created during installation.

Solar modules

  • Systems are powered by solar photovoltaic modules, with the number of the modules dependent on the specific site requirements
  • The solar modules have no moving parts, require virtually no maintenance and typically come  with a  25-year power output warranty

Controller

  • The small controller box is typically mounted on the same pole as the solar modules
  • The controller’s in-built maximum power point tracker (MPPT) maximises the power provided by the solar array in all weather conditions

Pump

  • Mono Energy offers two main pump options, the Sun-Ray (a surface-mounted or floating pump) or the Sun-Sub (a submersible pump)
  • The motors in the pumps come in a range of sizes depending on the application and volume of water required

 Distribution piping

  • All piping for irrigation is included
  • Farmers can choose from drip, sprinkler or trench irrigation options according to what is most appropriate for their crops
  • Distribution piping can be set up to allow farmers to direct water to different parts of the field at different times
